Our History

2012

Founded out of Carnegie Mellon University

Onward Robotics originated from CMU’s esteemed National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC), the world’s largest robotics research and development organization.

2016

R&D for Mobile Piece-Picking

Company focused on research and development of a mobile robot that used vision-guidance and mobile manipulation to automate piece-picking processes. Ultimately, humans still picked faster and more efficiently, preventing a meaningful business case for the solution.

2020

Focus on Automated Material Movement

Developed an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) platform that could transport materials up to 600 lbs. Engineers fine-tuned AMR perception, obstacle avoidance, and innovative hot-swappable battery technology as the business focused on integrator partnerships.

2021

New Leadership, Stealth Mode Pivot

With a new CEO and executive team in place, the company pivoted and went into stealth mode as it leveraged its industry experience and intellectual property to solve a critical supply chain pain point: automating outdated fulfillment processes so companies could fill orders more accurately, safely, and efficiently.

2023

Revolutionizing Order Fulfillment

Onward Robotics launches its new Meet Me solution, with intuitive put-to-light Lumabot AMRs and a robust enterprise platform unlike anything else in the market. By coordinating humans and robots as a cohesive system, Onward Robotics enables warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing operations to increase productivity, mitigate operational risk, and scale without adding headcount.
