Amy Santoso

Carnegie Mellon University

Master of Mechanical Engineering

What is your major?

I graduated from CU Boulder last year and am currently at Carnegie Mellon to pursue my Master’s in Mechanical Engineering.

What do you hope to gain from your internship with IAM Robotics?

My previous experiences have been in research settings, so I am excited about working at a robotics company. I’m interested in pursuing a career in robotics and automation, and I think working at IAM Robotics can help me develop new skills that will be helpful in the future.

What are some of the coolest projects you’ve worked on professionally so far? What kinds of projects do you look forward to at IAM Robotics?

Two summers ago I worked in a lab focusing on autonomous vehicle research. One of their facilities is a 1:25 scaled city which they use to simulate traffic scenarios. My favorite part was when we set up manual mode on one of the cars, so it was an FPV RC car we could drive around the city.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Amy skiing | IAM Robotics

In my free time I enjoy knitting, video games, and flying my drone. Some of the things I’d like to do more of are skiing and traveling.

What are your professional goals after completing your education?

I’ve always been intrigued by the new technologies in the market. Post-graduation I hope to work on projects related to factory automation or smart consumer products.

What are you listening to/watching?

My go-to comfort TV shows, The Big Bang Theory and The Office, of course!

Did anything surprise you when you started at IAM Robotics?Amy in the mountains | IAM Robotics

The camaraderie. Everyone is very willing to help, both on technical and social aspects. I’ve never felt embarrassed to ask a question on something I don’t know.

If you could give one bit of advice to other students as they look for an internship, what would it be?

Sign up for newsletters! I heard about IAMR from one of the Pittsburgh Robotics Network newsletters.

Favorite robot movie?

Depending on the day, it’s between Big Hero 6 and WALL-E.
