Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
What is your major?
I am currently pursuing my Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering at Penn State.
What do you hope to gain from your internship with IAM Robotics?
This opportunity sounded like the perfect way to push my development skills and experience to the next level by integrating and developing with common enterprise tools like Docker, Google Cloud, and so many other cool services. Now that I’ve had time to sink in here at IAMR on the Swift team, I’m looking forward to new opportunities to put my skills to work with these new technologies in a professional environment.
What are some of the coolest projects you’ve worked on professionally so far? What kind of projects do you look forward to at IAM Robotics?
While I haven’t had that much professional development experience, I have had a few cool projects as a student. One of the most interesting projects that I worked on recently was implementing a MIPS CPU over an FPGA. In this internship, I really enjoy tasks that allow me to take liberties at architecting the solution or those that force me to collaborate with the engineers here on a design. It’s one of my favorite ways to learn!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I have a few core hobbies. For one, I spend a fair amount of time biking. Around my neighborhood, downtown, or mountain biking, I love jumping on my bike and taking a mental break from the day. I also play the drums (with other musician friends, when possible). One of my favorite non-work activities, though, is working with a few servers I have here at my house. Breaking them, setting them up and configuring them, developing tools for them, etc. Some people call it homelabbing, but I just call it my money pit!
What are your professional goals after completing your education?
I’m not totally sure what route I want to take just yet, but if I do find an area of specialty that particularly sparks my interest, I would like to pursue a Master’s upon completing my undergrad.
What are you listening to/watching?
I’m patiently waiting for a new Odesza album, but in the meantime, I’ve really liked A Moment Apart. I’m also slowly learning Steely Dan’s Aja on the drums. As for TV, Loki has been very interesting, and I am nearly finished watching House.
Did anything surprise you when you started at IAM Robotics?
How welcoming and helpful everyone is. This is my first time working on a team at a company, and it can be very easy to get lost along the way without certain details or intuitions. However, everyone I talk to is very willing to fill me in with how one thing or another works and help get me on the right track. There is such a diverse group of awesome, intelligent people working here, and it’s been such a privilege learning and working alongside them.
If you could give one bit of advice to other students as they look for an internship, what would it be?
Apply for internships even if you don’t feel like you check all the boxes. You might have just the level of experience they’re looking for!
Favorite robot movie?
While it’s not technically a “robot movie” so-to-speak, my favorite movie with robots is hands down Interstellar. I love TARS.
